Declarative 3D: Community Group Leads Real-time 3D + Web Rationalization

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) August 08, 2011

The Web3D Consortium has joined forces with the W3C and Khronos standards organizations to launch a new open Community Group chartered to examine the requirements, options, and use cases for an integration of interactive 3D graphics capabilities into the W3C technology stack. While imperative graphics APIs are powerful and necessary , a Declarative 3D description can provide web authors an easy way to add interactive high-level declarative 3D objects through the HTML Document Object Model (DOM). For example, this description should support web authors to easily create, share, and experience interactive 3D graphics using Javascript and HTML documents. The community group was launched with a meeting at the annual ACM Web3D Conference 2011 in Paris, France.

Platforms for 3D delivery over the web have been evolving for almost two decades. Recent developments such as the HTML5 canvas tag and WebGL open up a huge new audience and channel for interactive 3D since no plug-in is required to visualize complex 3D data and build rich 3D-enabled web applications. Throughout the development of HTML5, the Web3D Consortium provided key input regarding motivation, goals and examples of how the ISO standard X3D scenegraph can be integrated with the DOM.

X3D DOM (http://www.x3dom.org), developed by Fraunhofer IGD, is one such open-source solution leveraging the existing ISO standard of Extensible 3D (X3D) with the W3C DOM and WebGL. The release of X3DOM 1.2 will be showcased though demos in the Web3D Consortium Booth (# 814) including features like Flash integration as well as new developments in an asymmetric data approach to support large data-sets in declarative 3D scenes. In addition X3DOM content and examples will be presented at several BOFs including WebGL and the X3D/HTML5 BOF.
